Travel Photography
Travel photography is why many people purchase a camera. They want to record the trip so they can show the pictures to all their friends when they return.
Without any preparation of any kind, most of your travel photography pictures will be very boring. There will be pictures of those on the trip standing in front of signs, monuments, and various scenic attractions, but not very interesting.
If the camera is new, take pictures before you go. Understand how the camera works, read the instruction book, and purchase any spare items that might be useful. A spare battery and charger are a must. All cameras now use batteries, and a dead battery will be very frustrating.
If you are using film, have plenty of extra rolls. If digital, at least one spare memory card, or more for the camera. You do not want to run out of memory. There are a variety of storage devices available that can store huge amount of pictures.
Depending on the camera you purchase, you may want to purchase additional lenses. A telephoto and a wide angle lens are also very desirable. It all depends on the type of pictures you are going to take. A sunshade, which fits on the front of the lens, is to keep sun light out of the lens to prevent flare. A tripod is also a very good investment.
Purchase or rent a book from the library or camera store on travel photography. This will give you some good ideas on what a good picture looks like. Travel agencies have a variety of brochures which will give you some good ideas. National Geographic is a terrific magazine.
All of the above are good ideas if you are interested in taking quality photographs. This is all up to you. It will take some effort, but it will be worth it in the end when someone compliments you about the picture that you took.
Seeing the picture is more important than taking the picture. If you don’t see it, how can you take the picture. The ability to see a picture does not come easy to everyone. If you have taken any art classes, this would have been a great help. Some people can go somewhere and find dozens of pictures to take, while another person can not find anything.
Composition is the next important thing to do before the picture is taken. When you have decided on the picture, look at all the details. There are many things that can ruin a picture. Keep the vertical and horizontal lines straight. A horizon that is high on one side and low on the other is a common problem. A person standing in front of a tree will end up looking like the tree is growing out of their head. Other people walking in front you when you are taking the picture.
Most cameras have a zoom lens. Zoom in and out while looking in the view finder. You will be surprised at how better a picture can be made. Fill up the frame. Dead space is not worth looking at.
Have others look at your pictures and listen to what they think is good or bad. You’ll probably think your pictures are ok but you want to please those that are looking at you photos.
