So you want to be in fashion photography It sounds exciting. Gorgeous ladies, dressed in fashionable clothing and accessories, just waiting to have their pictures taken. What more could you ask for? Taking the picture is the easy part of it. Getting the pictures accepted is the hard part, and that is what pays the bills.

The French were the first to use fashion photography in magazines in 1909. The models in were very stiff, and not at all relaxed. It wasn’t until 1936 that fashion photography models were first shown in beach clothing, and the trend hasn’t been the same since then.

The high paying, traveling all over the world glamour photographer isn’t for everyone. It takes time, experience, and energy to get to the top where the high pay is, and not everyone can wait that long. It is rewarding though, as you name goes along with all photographs.

There are other area that one can settle into editorial photography, art photography, celebrity portraits, and many other niche markets. These do not pay as well, no one knows that you took the pictures, but the income is steady.

Getting started is difficult. Starting a portfolio, sending your work to magazine editors, and having your pictures shown in a gallery is a start. Use a website. This is an inexpensive way to show your work and do any retouching and printing. When you are asked by an editor to bring your work in, have either 8×10 prints or 4×5 transparencies.

Editorial photography is a photograph accompanied by a written article or column in a magazine. The photographer does not choose or decide how the photograph is to be taken. It is strictly up to the editor as to what style they want. Your name normally appears along side these photos.

Catalog photography is selling products for a large store that sends out a catalog to a large number of potential clients. The photographer is given a certain amount of self expression, but has to work fast and be well qualified. Advertising photography is for the purpose of selling a product. This type of photography can be a product only or the product with a model. Top name photographers are often chosen to add prestige to the product.

When taking a job, it your responsibility as the photographer to secure a model. This is normally done through a modeling agency. You want to make sure what you are getting, so it is imperative that you meet the model first. Do not trust the agency to get a model for you, as you can have an unpleasant surprise, and on the day of the shoot, it is too late. There can be times when the company you are photographing for prefers to book the models there self. That is there prerogative.

Develop a good rapport with the model upon her arrival. Make her feel relaxed. Do anything to make her comfortable, as she is what your day is all about. You will also have others on your team, such as the hair stylist, make up artist, and others that are important to make everything go smoothly.

Every fashion category has different requirements, such as makeup, location, type of model. This is something that takes a long time to learn if you want to become proficient and develop a name for your self.

The company you are photographing for wants perfection, and they will get it, if not from you, it will be from someone else.

The location is also an important part of taking the photographs. If it is in your own studio, it simplifies the whole process. Everything is available and you can concentrate on the details of taking the photos. If you have to do the job at another location, that means bringing every with you. Cameras, film, memory, lighting and everything else that is required.

Make a list, bring spares of everything, as once you are there and ready, it is too late if something is forgotten and fail to function. You will obviously take plenty of shots, different poses, angles, and lighting variations.

Make sure you get a model release with a description of how the photographs are to be used and where. Without this, you will have a problem being able to use the photographs.

Now that you are finished and the proofs are in the art directors hands, all you can do is just wait for his decision.
